Municipal Bond Forum

Do longer-term muni bonds make sense?

I'm 71 years old and looking to invest in municipal bonds. Should I still look at long-term muni bonds?

James A. Klotz responds:

We have never suggested that investors should try to outlive their investments.

Actually, investors in their 70s and 80s buy longer-term bonds to produce the maximum amount of tax-free income.

Keep in mind, your municipal bonds can be passed to your heirs as easily as cash.

Before we can provide any specific advice, we would need more knowledge of your individual situation.
