Call protection

Q

What is meant by “call protection”?

J.G

A

James A. Klotz responds:

Most municipal bonds are issued with a 10-year call feature. This means that the bonds cannot be called by the issuer until that date. We would term this “10-year call protection.” This protects the bondholders from having their bonds called whenever interest rates drop.
